ASO
The ASO (Address Supporting Organization), ICANN's advisory and supporting body on numbering and addressing issues, was created in October 1999 after a Memorandum of Understanding was subscribed between the existing regional registries and ICANN. LACNIC adhered to the Memorandum, signing it after its recognition as a regional registry. In October 2004 a new Memorandum of Understanding was signed between ICANN and the NRO on behalf of the Regional Registries, thus consolidating the ASO as one of the supporting organizations within the ICANN structure.
The ASO Address Council, made up by three representatives from each regional registry, is in charge of supervising and developing recommendations on IP addressing policies and advising ICANN's Board of Directors on these matters. Another important role of the Address Council is to appoint two members to ICANN's Board of Directors.
Of the three members of the ASO Address Council, two are elected by each Regional Registry's Public Forum while the third is appointed by each Regional Registry's Board of Directors.

NRO
In order to formalize their collaboration efforts, in October 2003 the Regional Internet Registries (RIRs) created the NRO (Number Resource Organization). The main goals of the NRO are the following:
- to protect unallocated address space
- to promote and protect an open and participative policy development process
- to act as a mechanism for coordinating Regional Registries on matters of common interest
- to act as a focal point between RIRs and the Internet community in general
According to the terms of the new Memorandum of Understanding signed between ICANN and the RIRs in October 2004 (to which later AfriNIC adhered), the NRO Number Council fulfils the role of the ASO Address Council.
